‘Having eight Arab teams at World Cup is a true honour for regional football’
Doha, Qatar: The FIFA World Cup 2026 will represent a key milestone for Arabfootball, with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia all set to compete, marking the largest Arab presence in the tournament’s history.

For former Qatar national team goalkeeper Ahmed Khalil, the qualification of eight Arab teams to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ stands as a testament to the remarkable progress of football across the region.
In an interview with the Local Organising Committee for Football Events, Khalil said: “Having eight Arab teams at the World Cup is a true honour for regional football. But I hope it doesn’t stay a matter of participation alone. I want to see every one of these teams go into their groups and succeed.”
Khalil, who played for many years with the Qatar national team, believes the achievement reflects more than a single qualifying campaign: “The standard of play has risen, the administrative structures have matured and financial support has grown considerably. Eight teams reaching this stage is evidence of a system working as a whole: officials, federations and technical staff alike.”
Khalil pointed to Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as the decisive turning point for regional football, a tournament that proved the region could deliver the sport’s biggest event and saw Morocco become the first Arab and African side to reach the semi-finals.
He added: “Qatar showcased this region’s ability to host the world at the very highest of standards,its rich football culture and flourishing talent. The progress these teams have made since 2022 is no coincidence. It is a direct result of that experience.”
On Qatar’s prospects at the tournament, Khalil expressed confidence that Al Annabi will perform in a way that reflects their status as Asian champions, noting that teamwork, determination and national pride carry as much weight as technical ability at this level of the game.
Looking further ahead, he urged the region to build on this momentum, expressing hope that participation in 2026 would help establish Arab teams as serious contenders on the world stage and create wider opportunities for generations to come.
Javier Aguirre’s Mexico Open World Cup With Win
Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the 2026 World Cup opener, giving former Egypt manager Javier Aguirre a winning start on home soil.
Mexico opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca, giving head coach Javier Aguirre a victory in the tournament’s first match.
Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the World Cup in the ninth minute. Raúl Jiménez added Mexico’s second in the 67th minute.
South Africa finished with nine men after Sphephelo Sithole was sent off early in the second half and Themba Zwane received a late red card.
The match opened the expanded 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. Mexico lead Group A after the win. The group also includes South Korea and Czechia.
Javier Aguirre’s brief tenure with Egypt came to an end in 2019 after losing to South Africa in the AFCON.

المكسيك تخطف الأضواء بحفل افتتاح مبهر
خيمت الموسيقى والمغنية شاكيرا على مراسم افتتاح مونديال 2026 في كرة القدم أمس على ملعب أستيكا في مكسيكو سيتي، وكانت بمثابة تمهيد لمباراة الافتتاح بين المكسيك وجنوب أفريقيا.
واحتشد ثمانون ألف متفرج على مدرجات الملعب، لمتابعة الحفل الموسيقي الذي استمر لنحو عشرين دقيقة اختتمته المغنية الكولومبية شاكيرا بتأدية الأغنية الرسمية للمونديال «داي داي» (هيا هيا)، بمشاركة النيجيري بورنا بوي، في مزيج يجمع بين البوب اللاتيني وإيقاعات الأفروبيتس.
وكما حدث قبل 16 عاما، كانت شاكيرا نجمة هذا الحفل. فبعد النشيد الرسمي لمونديال جنوب أفريقيا 2010، «واكا واكا» الذي تحول إلى أغنية ناجحة، ظهرت الكولومبية، مرتدية نظارات شمسية وبذلة صفراء وتنورة بنفسجية، لتقدم أغنيتها وسط عشرات الراقصين والراقصات.
قبلها، تعاقبت على المسرح فرقة «مانا» المكسيكية، ومغني البوب الفنزويلي داني أوشن، وفرقة «لوس أنخليس أسوليس»، ونجم الريغيتون الكولومبي جيه بالفين، وكذلك الإسبانية- المكسيكية بيليندا، وذلك عقب لوحة افتتاحية جسدت راقصين يرتدون أزياء من السكان الأصليين، تتوجهم ريشات كبيرة، ونساء بملابس تقليدية، على إيقاع قارعي للطبول.
وقبل المباراة بين المكسيك وجنوب أفريقيا، من المقرر أن يؤدي التينور الإيطالي أندريا بوتشيلي النشيد الرسمي لكأس العالم، بعنوان «DNA» (دي أن ايه)، وهو مزيج من الأوبرا والموسيقى الإلكترونية من إنتاج منسق الأغاني الفرنسي دافيد غيتا.
وقبل أكثر من ساعة بقليل من انطلاق الافتتاح، حاول آلاف من المشجعين اقتحام المنطقة الرسمية المخصصة للجماهير في مكسيكو سيتي، ما أدى إلى مشاهد فوضوية.
وتعرض الوصول إلى مهرجان المشجعين في ساحة سوكالو لعرقلة بسبب الحواجز المعدنية التي نُصبت في الأيام الأخيرة لمنع المعلمين المحتجين من الوصول إلى المنطقة.
