Somali referee banned by US to officiate European Super Cup: UEFA

Paris, France: Somali referee Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States for the World Cup, was on Thursday named to officiate UEFA's Super Cup, European football's governing body announced.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin poured praise on the Somali referee in a statement released a few hours before global body FIFA's flagship World Cup was to start.

"Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee, who has proven himself at the highest competition level of the Confederation of African Football," said Ceferin. cricket-ipl.in

"Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination."

UEFA said that after talks with the African confederation, it "has today appointed Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup" on August 12 in Salzburg, Austria, between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa.

Artan's case has been on of many incidents to taint the runup to FIFA's World Cup.

UEFA said Artan's appointment came in the framework of an accord between UEFA and CAF to encourage cooperation.

African pride

"UEFA and CAF are united by a shared commitment to developing football at all levels and promoting the core values of unity, equality and non-discrimination," it said.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said Artan had "made Somalia and the entire people of the African continent, extremely proud".

"His receipt of the CAF men's referee of the year award 2025 and his appointment as a referee of the FIFA World Cup 2026 are a recognition of his world-class refereeing ability and the international respect that he enjoys."

His appointment to referee the Super Cup "is a great honour for Omar Artan and for African referees and is also an excellent example of football, bringing together and uniting people from Africa and Europe and worldwide", Motsepe said.

Artan was barred from entering the US on Saturday after arriving at Miami International Airport.

A US State Department official told AFP that the referee was "associated with suspected members of terrorist organizations", therefore "making the traveler ineligible for admission to the United States".

FIFA also confirmed that he would no longer be part of the World Cup.

Artan's appointment to the 52-strong roster of referees for the finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States had been a huge source of pride for his compatriots.

He returned to a hero's welcome in Mogadishu on Wednesday and vowed to take part in the next World Cup in 2030.

وقال «ويفا» في بيان: «عقب مشاورات مع الاتحاد الشقيق، الاتحاد الأفريقي لكرة القدم (كاف)، قرر ويفا تعيين الحكم الصومالي عمر عرتن لإدارة مباراة الكأس السوبر الأوروبية 2026».
ومن المقرر أن تُقام المباراة التي تجمع بين باريس سان جرمان الفرنسي بطل دوري أبطال أوروبا وأستون فيلا الإنجليزي بطل مسابقة الدوري الأوروبي (يوروبا ليغ) في 12 أغسطس بمدينة سالزبورغ النمساوية.

وأضاف: «أشكر الاتحاد القطري لكرة القدم على إتاحة الفرصة لنا كصناع محتوى من أجل تغطية مباريات العنابي وأجواء كأس العالم من قلب الحدث. ما شاهدته على أرض الواقع يؤكد أن هناك عملاً ضخماً تم التخطيط له منذ فترة طويلة، والنتيجة أن الجماهير القطرية أصبحت قادرة على التركيز فقط على تشجيع المنتخب دون الانشغال بأي تفاصيل تنظيمية أو لوجستية».
وأوضح أن المشروع القطري يشمل أربع طائرات مخصصة لنقل الجماهير بين المدن المستضيفة لمباريات المنتخب، إلى جانب توفير 12 فندقاً و25 حافلة لخدمة ما يقارب ألف مشجع يرافقون العنابي في الولايات المتحدة وكندا، مؤكداً أن هذه الأرقام تعكس حجم الجهد المبذول لإنجاح التجربة الجماهيرية القطرية في المونديال. وأشار عدنان إلى أن الجماهير ستتنقل بكل سهولة بين سان فرانسيسكو وفانكوفر وسياتل لمتابعة مباريات المنتخب، موضحاً أن جميع الترتيبات المتعلقة بالسفر والإقامة والتنقل تم إعدادها بشكل احترافي يضمن راحة المشجعين طوال فترة البطولة. وأكد أن المبادرة لا تقتصر على الجماهير القادمة من قطر فقط، بل امتدت لتشمل أبناء الجاليات العربية والقطرية المقيمين في الولايات المتحدة وكندا، حيث تم تخصيص آلية إلكترونية سهلة للحصول على تذاكر مباريات المنتخب الوطني.

واختتم تصريحاته بالتأكيد على أن كأس العالم يبقى الحدث الرياضي الأهم على مستوى العالم، متوقعاً أن ترتفع وتيرة الحماس الجماهيري مع انطلاق المباريات الرسمية، مشدداً على أن الجماهير القطرية ستكون أحد أبرز مشاهد البطولة بفضل الدعم والتنظيم الاستثنائي الذي وفره الاتحاد القطري لكرة القدم، والذي منح المشجع فرصة عيش تجربة مونديالية متكاملة بكل تفاصيلها.



ناصر الكواري: ردود فعل إيجابية واسعة

أكد ناصر مبارك الكواري، مدير الفعاليات والعلاقات المجتمعية في مؤسسة دوري نجوم قطر، أن الأجواء المحيطة بالجماهير القطرية في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تبعث على التفاؤل قبل انطلاق مشوار المنتخب الوطني في كأس العالم 2026، مشيراً إلى أن الحماس الكبير الذي أظهرته الجماهير منذ اللحظات الأولى لوصولها يعكس حجم الشغف والرغبة في مؤازرة العنابي خلال الحدث العالمي. وقال الكواري إن الجماهير القطرية أبدت حماساً استثنائياً منذ بدء الرحلة إلى الولايات المتحدة، مضيفاً: «الأجواء مميزة للغاية، ونأمل أن يكون هذا الحضور الجماهيري القوي دافعاً إضافياً للاعبين سواء خلال المعسكر الإعدادي أو أثناء المباريات الرسمية، لأن دعم المدرجات يمثل عنصراً مهماً في مثل هذه البطولات الكبرى».

London: Wimbledon's prize money pot has been increased by 20 percent to a tournament-record figure of £64.2 million ($85.7 million).

All England Club chiefs revealed the substantial cash boost for players during a pre-tournament press conference on Thursday.

The Wimbledon singles' champions will now pocket £3.6million each.

Italy's Jannik Sinner is the reigning men's champion, while Poland's Iga Swiatek won the women's event last year.

Even first round losers will be richly compensated at Wimbledon this year, with £80,000 allocated to players beaten at that stage.

The Wimbledon raise comes after several of the world's top players staged a protest prior to the recent the French Open by limiting media activities to 15 minutes.

The players were frustrated that prize money at Roland Garros only increased by 9.5 percent from 2025 and stayed at around 15 percent of the revenue generated from the clay-court tournament.

It is believed the players want the prize fund to be closer to 22 percent of the tournament's revenue.

Wimbledon's increase is from £53.5 million last year to £64.2 million for this year's event, which starts in south-west London on June 29.

"I recognise there is one topic you are most interested in hearing about this morning and that's prize money," Wimbledon chair Debbie Jevans told reporters on Thursday.

"For 2026 the prize money fund will be £64.2 million, that is a 20 percent increase on last year and £10.7 million uplift which allows players to continue to share in our success.

"Our support for players is distributed throughout the draw. Gentleman and Ladies singles' champions will each receive £3.6 million and first-round prize money is set at £80,000, so players that lose in the first round will share more than £5 million in prize money.

"These figures represent a substantial increase in prize money."

Wimbledon CEO Sally Bolton met with the players' representative Larry Scott at Roland Garros last month to discuss the prize money issue.

"There has been no dialogue with the players direct but we have had dialogue with Larry Scott, who has been appointed by some of players to represent them," Jevans said.

"We have had dialogue, email exchanges and a meeting in Paris. After Paris you have all read the 22 percent and £70 million, what we have done is right and appropriate.

"We begin looking at prize money in January. We looked at investment in facilities, in grassroots and player prize money. I would hope the players would welcome it."

Doha, Qatar: Four years ago, Qatar’s World Cup debut never truly got going. A nervy opening defeat to Ecuador set the tone for a difficult campaign that ended without a point and with hopes fading before the knockout rounds even came into view.

As Al Annabi prepare to begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Switzerland at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara tomorrow, head coach Julen Lopetegui will be hoping for a far brighter start.

The stakes are significant as the reigning Asian champions enter their second consecutive World Cup with ambitions of reaching the knockout stage for the first time, but their toughest Group B assignment arrives immediately against a Switzerland side dubbed the favourites to finish top of the section.

Switzerland bring experience, consistency and a squad packed with players competing at the highest levels of European football.

Murat Yakin’s side have progressed from the group stage at each of the last three World Cups and reached the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

This is Switzerland’s 13th World Cup appearance and they arrived in North America unbeaten in qualifying, winning four and drawing two of their six matches.

Led by captain Granit Xhaka, Switzerland also possess valuable World Cup experience throughout the squad. Xhaka is preparing for his fourth successive World Cup, while Ricardo Rodriguez is also set for a fourth appearance.

Five members of Yakin’s squad are competing at their third World Cup, giving the Swiss a core group accustomed to the demands and pressure of major tournaments.

Qatar’s preparations have not been entirely smooth. Planned high-profile friendlies against Argentina national football team and Serbia national football team were cancelled due to regional tensions, limiting opportunities to test themselves against elite oppositions before travelling to North America.

Even so, Lopetegui has remained encouraged by the work completed during training camps at home and in the United States. Qatar closed their preparations with a 1-0 defeat to Ireland and a goalless draw against El Salvador, results that highlighted both the team’s defensive organisation and their continuing search for greater attacking efficiency.

Lopetegui has made no secret of the challenge awaiting his side against Switzerland.

“Switzerland are a huge challenge in all aspects,” Lopetegui said recently, pointing to the quality, experience and tactical discipline that have made the Swiss regular competitors at major tournaments.

For Qatar, the task will be to avoid a repeat of the slow start that undermined their campaign in 2022. Defensive concentration will be essential against a Swiss side capable of controlling possession and punishing mistakes, while Qatar must also show greater attacking ambition than they managed in their opening World Cup appearance against Ecuador.

Much of that responsibility will fall on Akram Afif, Qatar’s leading creative force, and Almoez Ali, the country’s all-time leading scorer, who continues his return to full fitness after an injury-interrupted season. Midfielders Assim Madibo and Ahmed Fathy are expected to play important roles in helping Qatar compete physically and tactically against a well-drilled opponent.

Lopetegui has repeatedly stressed that Qatar are not travelling to the World Cup simply to participate.

“In theory, they may be stronger than us, but they have to prove that on the pitch. Our job is to defend our chances and compete from the first minute,” the coach said.

That message may be particularly important in the opening match. With Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina still to come, a positive result against the group favourites would significantly strengthen Qatar’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
