IND vs WI: Reifer Stresses Need for West Indies to Step Up in Middle Overs

West Indies batting coach Floyd Reifer admitted that the team’s batting group will have to work on their game against spin, which plays a major role during the middle overs of ODI cricket, in order to perform well.

In the first ODI, West Indies got off to a solid start, with the openers adding a century partnership. The visitors were going strong before Kuldeep Yadav turned things in India’s favour during the middle overs, finishing with a four-wicket haul. That spell proved to be the difference in the high-scoring game. akupunkturabielsko.pl

“When you play on slow, turning wickets in different parts of the world, guys have to make adjustments and wickets will fall on those types of surfaces,” said Reifer ahead of the second ODI. “But batting in the middle overs is something that we continue to work on. We want to get really consistent with that. The aim is to get back to 2024 and 2025, when we scored at more than six runs an over in the middle overs. But it’s a work in progress. Guys have improved their batting against spin, but there’s still a long way to go for us.”

The Men in Maroon were sloppy in the field in Thiruvananthapuram. Reifer has reiterated the importance of fielding, particularly when playing against top teams.

“Fielding is an attitude,” he said. “You come on the day and you’ve got to be up for it. You’re playing against the No. 1 team in the world on good wickets and fast outfields – it’s important to take your chances. You can’t afford to drop players like Gill, Rohit and Kohli. We’ve really emphasised the importance of staying focused on the field and bringing the right attitude.”

All-rounder Justin Greaves, who scored a century in the first game, has been ruled out of the second ODI. As a result, West Indies are expected to make changes in Guwahati, where a virtual series decider will be played.

Kuldeep’s unique skills can help us win in any condition: Bahutule

[popcorn number="4-40" desc="Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling figures in the first ODI vs WI" class="Default"]

India’s spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule was waxed lyrical about left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav and his ‘unique ability’ to deliver a match-winning spell across all conditions for the Men in Blue.

Yadav’s 4-40 in the first ODI against West Indies turned the match in India’s favour, and Bahutule expects more of the same from him in the second match here.

“Kuldeep Yadav has always been a match winner for India. He came into a series well prepared and again, he is a player who every team would want to have because he is always lively on and off the field. At the same time, his unique skills help us to perform in any conditions,” Bahutule told reporters at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Ahead of the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year, Bahutule spoke of fine-tuning the bowling combinations.

“These series are a good opportunity for us to also see different types of [bowling] combinations we can have in the team. So that’s what the thought process was to give Nitish Reddy the new ball [in the first ODI]. Ample opportunities will be given to all the bowlers in different phases. So you might see Gurnoor [Brar] bowling with the new ball, things like that. When it comes to the fast bowlers, it will be important to see who would actually be the three fast bowlers [that India take to the World Cup], explained Bahutule.

India batter Rohit Sharma touched upon his relationship with Virat Kohli, stressing that, having played together for close to two decades, there is good camaraderie between the two legends of the game.

Speaking to JioStar, Rohit was, as usual, candid with his responses. When asked about the ‘Ro-Ko’ tag given to him and Kohli, Rohit said: “I think we were together. This started, I think, when we were playing in Australia, or right after Australia when we came to India. That’s when this started, and whenever this plays on TV, we look at each other and laugh. Which is good, it’s fun. People want masala, so there you go, there is some masala.”

While their methods of playing could be different, Rohit highlighted that the focus is on doing things that can help the Ro-Ko duo maintain a ‘certain level’ in international cricket.

“So yeah, there’s a strong camaraderie between the two of us, and we understand what it requires to be at a certain level when you’re playing at this level,” Rohit said. “Methods are different, obviously, but that’s how it should be. Every individual is different.”

Rohit was dismissed for 32 in a game in which three batters, including Kohli, scored hundreds. India won the first ODI by eight wickets and will now look to seal the series in Guwahati.
