Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan heaped high praise on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Sanju Samson after another match-winning contribution in the ongoing IPL 2026. On May 5 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Delhi, he played an unbeaten 87-run knock off 52 balls to chase down the 156-run target successfully, with eight wickets and 2.3 overs to spare.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Pathan claimed that Samson “is currently batting at his peak” and that his “game awareness” has been top-notch.
“Sanju Samson is batting at his peak right now, and what stands out is his game awareness. He’s very clear about which bowlers to target and which ones to respect. You could see that he was cautious against someone like Lungi Ngidi, but the moment a less threatening option came on, he shifted gears and capitalised. That understanding of match-ups is outstanding. More importantly, he’s taking responsibility to finish games, especially on tricky surfaces, and doing it consistently. That’s what defines a batter in top form,” he said.
At one stage during the knock, Samson was 33 off 28 balls, and then he accelerated by adding the next 54 runs in just 24 balls, sealing the win for his team. He bagged the Player of the Match award in that clash, and with that win, CSK are now placed sixth with 10 points from 10 matches.
After this knock, Samson has taken his tally to 402 runs in 10 innings, averaging 57.42 at a strike rate of 167.50, including two centuries and one fifty in IPL 2026 so far.
