Gukesh beats Sindarov to bounce back in Grand Chess Tour: Super Rapid & Blitz Poland 2026

Gukesh beats Sindarov in round 5 of Grand Chess Tour 2026 (PC-X)

At the Grand Chess Tour: Super Rapid & Blitz Poland 2026 in Warsaw, the rapid section is beginning to take shape after two days of action, with players fighting for early momentum in a tightly contested field.

Among the key moments so far, D Gukesh registered an important win in Round 5, defeating Javokhir Sindarov. The match carried extra attention as it was their first meeting since Sindarov emerged as the challenger for Gukesh’s World Championship title.

Playing with the black pieces, Gukesh opted for the Caro–Kann Defence and approached the game with patience. Sindarov started actively and tried to build early pressure, but Gukesh remained solid and did not allow any major breakthroughs. As the game moved into the middlegame, Gukesh began to find his chances, gradually improving his position and taking control.

The turning point came when Gukesh capitalised on small inaccuracies and opened up the position in his favour. From there, he transitioned smoothly into the endgame, where his superior coordination and pawn structure made the difference. He went on to convert the advantage in 52 moves, sealing a confident win. The importance of the victory was evident, as Gukesh celebrated with a rare fist pump after the game.

Overall, the tournament has seen strong performances at the top. Wesley So currently leads the standings with 8 points after six rounds, while Hans Niemann follows closely with 7 points. Gukesh, with 5 points, sits in mid-table but has gained valuable momentum with this win.

Gukesh’s journey so far has been mixed. He had a slow start on Day 1 (Rounds 1–3) and then suffered a setback in Round 4 against Radosław Wojtaszek. However, his victory over Sindarov in Round 5 marks a strong comeback and could prove crucial as the tournament progresses.

With three more rapid rounds scheduled for 7 May, followed by the blitz segment on 8 and 9 May, the competition is set to intensify. Gukesh will now look to build on this performance and climb further up the standings.
