All-round SRH outclass PBKS at home

A stellar display from the top four of Sunrisers Hyderabad, coupled with a fine bowling performance, helped the home side outclass Punjab Kings and secure a 33-run win on Wednesday. With this victory, they move to the top of the points table.

Class from Klaasen

Continuing his fine run of form, Heinrich Klaasen once again starred with the bat, scoring 69. The South African came in at number four and struck a flurry of boundaries to get his innings going. He eased the pressure on Ishan Kishan, who looked scratchy early on before finding his rhythm. At no point did Klaasen look in any discomfort against any type of bowling. The dynamic right-hander took calculated risks and paced his innings superbly to top-score for his side once again. PBKS had dropped him earlier, and Klaasen made them pay.

All-round brilliance from Reddy on return

Last year, after the halfway mark, SRH decided to try Nitish Kumar Reddy in the lower middle order, but it did not work. This season, with Klaasen occupying the number four role, Reddy has excelled as a finisher. The way he is playing clearly indicates that he has worked on his power game. A breezy 29 off 13 balls ensured that SRH crossed the 230-run mark. His presence meant Klaasen was not left alone to do the heavy lifting in the slog overs.

Reddy briefly left the field in the second innings after feeling discomfort in his left leg. However, it was a good outing for him overall, as he claimed the crucial wicket of the in-form Prabhsimran Singh with the new ball in his first over. The right-arm medium pacer bowled two overs, conceding just 11 runs and taking a wicket.

Powerplay punch by SRH

Pat Cummins took on the responsibility of making early inroads with the new ball, and delivered. The SRH skipper set up Priyansh Arya well; a couple of dot balls pressured Arya into attempting an unnecessary shot, which led to his dismissal. Prabhsimran followed soon after, falling to Reddy.

Eshan Malinga came in as the first-change bowler and claimed the key wicket of Shreyas Iyer. The decision to introduce SRH’s most successful pacer of the season at that stage paid off handsomely. With three wickets of three in-form batters, SRH were firmly on top. Marcus Stoinis attempted to stabilise the innings but fell to Shivang Kumar’s googly. Cummins, in his second spell, removed Suryansh Shedge, and at 110/5, the match was all but over.

Connolly — the lone warrior for PBKS

After registering a golden duck in the previous game against Gujarat Titans, Cooper Connolly produced a fighting century for his side. Although the unbeaten 59-ball 107 came in a losing cause, the 22-year-old showed great resolve. The left-hand batter waged a lone battle, with none of the other PBKS batters offering meaningful support. Connolly’s innings remained the only bright spot for PBKS on what was another forgettable day for Shreyas Iyer’s team.
