Deon Fourie returns to Springbok squad for All Blacks series

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has recalled veteran utility forward Deon Fourie ahead of the four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.

The 39-year-old will join the Springbok squad in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

Fourie returns after lengthy injury lay-off

Fourie recently returned to top-level rugby after spending an extended period on the sidelines through injury.

He played for the DHL Stormers against the All Blacks in Cape Town on Friday night.

The Rugby World Cup winner last represented South Africa in the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final against New Zealand at the Stade de France in Paris.

His return to the Springbok squad follows his first appearance in the opening match of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour.

Springboks prepare for four All Blacks Tests

The Springboks and All Blacks will meet in four Tests across South Africa and the United States.

The series begins at 10bet Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 22 August.

The second Test takes place at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 29 August, followed by a match at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 5 September.

The final Test will be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on 12 September.

Springbok squad returns from Argentina

The Springboks returned to South Africa in two groups on Sunday and Monday following their trip to Argentina.

The final group is expected to arrive in Johannesburg today.

Fourie will link up with the squad as preparations begin for the opening Test at Ellis Park.

Nick Hatton leads Sharks against All Blacks

Nick Hatton has been named captain of the Hollywoodbets Sharks for their match against the All Blacks in Durban tonight.

Former New Zealand centre Ma’a Nonu will start on the Sharks bench.

The Durban fixture is the second match of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour.

New Zealand will face all four South African Vodacom United Rugby Championship teams before beginning the four-Test series against the Springboks.

All Blacks beat Stormers in tour opener

The tour started in Cape Town on Friday night.

The All Blacks secured a 38-21 victory over the DHL Stormers after facing a strong challenge from the hosts.

Their next match against the Sharks provides another preparation fixture before the Test series begins in Johannesburg.

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 11, 2026 – Impala Rugby has officially launched its Safeguarding Pilot, marking the start of a 16-week programme aimed at strengthening athlete safety, wellbeing, and safeguarding across the rugby section.

The launch took place on Saturday at Impala Club, Ngong Road, bringing together members of the Impala Rugby Executive Committee, coaches, and the technical team alongside MichezoSAFETunza Safeguarding.

The pilot will run through to 27 November 2026, with a review planned for December.

Launched on Safe Sport Day 2026, the initiative reflects a shared commitment to move safeguarding beyond policy and into the everyday experience of sport.

The pilot forms Phase One of the Impala Safe Club 2030 programme, beginning with rugby as the first section in which the safeguarding framework will be developed, tested, and strengthened.

The intention is to use the lessons from the rugby pilot to inform a broader safeguarding approach across the club.

During the launch session, participants discussed the purpose and scope of the pilot, the 16-week implementation plan, safeguarding leadership roles, responsibilities of the different partners, and the immediate actions required to get the programme underway.

The pilot will cover the whole rugby section — every squad, every coach, and every volunteer.

This includes age-grade and junior teams, senior men’s squads, the women’s side, coaches, officials, and volunteers.

Safeguarding considerations around match days, travel and tours, changing rooms and facilities, parents and spectators, athlete wellbeing, and the reporting and handling of concerns will also form part of the programme.

Over the coming months, the work will move through five stages — Assess, Design, Build, Equip and Embed — beginning with understanding the current rugby environment and identifying risks, before developing policies, codes, reporting systems and training that can be embedded into day-to-day club life.

A strong emphasis will also be placed on building the safeguarding capacity of the people closest to athletes.

Coaches and team officials will receive training on safe coaching, conduct, and recognising and reporting concerns, while players, volunteers, parents, and guardians will also be engaged through tailored sessions.

The launch represents an important first step in building a safeguarding system that is practical, understood, and visible across the rugby environment.

It is also an opportunity to learn. By testing the approach within a working rugby club, the pilot will help identify what effective safeguarding looks like in practice, what needs strengthening, and what lessons may be useful for other sporting environments.

Launching the programme on Safe Sport Day gives that commitment added significance.

Safe sport is not simply about having the right policy. It is about creating environments where athletes feel safe, respected, supported, and able to speak up.

The launch marks the beginning of that journey at Impala Rugby.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has called for greater composure in front of goal after Amakhosi’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows ended their MTN8 campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs created several opportunities in the quarter-final but failed to convert them, while Arrows capitalised on their opportunity to secure a place in the semi-finals.

First loss

The defeat was Da Cruz’s first since taking charge of the Soweto giants.

The French coach admitted the result was difficult to accept, particularly for the players and supporters who had backed the team at FNB Stadium.

“It’s very disappointing for the players because they put in a lot of effort. Also, for the fans because a lot of them came to the stadium,” Da Cruz said.

“We had a lot of chances to score but we didn’t take them and unfortunately they scored with their only chance from a cross.”

Da Cruz believes Kaizer Chiefs’ finishing problems were partly down to a lack of composure inside the penalty area.

“Regarding our chances, we lacked lucidity (composure) inside the box. Even after they scored we had opportunities but we need to work on being calmer in those situations,” he said.

Attitude of the players

Despite the early cup disappointment, Da Cruz was encouraged by the attitude shown by his players and their willingness to continue fighting until the final whistle.

“I am happy with the mindset of the players,” he said.

Kaizer Chiefs now have little time to dwell on the defeat, with their attention immediately turning to the Betway Premiership.

“We wanted to go further in this tournament and we are disappointed to be eliminated but we still have other competitions to compete in and we will continue to work hard to improve step by step,” Da Cruz said.

“I want the fans to be proud of the team in the next few weeks.”

Demanding schedule

The demanding schedule could also see Da Cruz rotate his squad, with players such as Pule Mmodi, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Dillan Solomons and Asanele Velebayi in line for opportunities.

Kaizer Chiefs host Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, 12 August, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30.

They will then face an early-season heavyweight clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at the same venue on Saturday, 15 August, at 15:00.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the immediate objective will be to put the MTN8 disappointment behind them and begin building momentum in the league.

Bjorn Fortuin will captain the Proteas on their white-ball tour of Namibia, with Duan Jansen earning his maiden international call-up.

DP World Lions spinner Bjorn Fortuin will captain the side as the Proteas take on Namibia and Zimbabwe in a T20 International (T20I) Tri-series from 28 August – 06 September at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.

The squad will remain in the capital city for a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against the hosts from 09 – 13 September, which will be the first-ever 50-over series between the two nations.

Momentum Multiply Titans all-rounder Duan Jansen has earned his maiden national call-up after impressing domestically.

The 26-year-old delivered consistently across both white-ball formats and was named Division 1 One Day Cup Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season, having guided the Titans to the 50-over title with a match-winning unbeaten 61 in the final against the DP World Lions.

His Titans teammate and all-rounder Eathan Bosch is the other uncapped T20I player in the squad, while batters Connor Esterhuizen (Lions) and Jordan Hermann (Dafabet Warriors), along with Hollywoodbets Dolphins seamer Nqobani Mokoena have received their first ODI call-ups.

The squad is bolstered by the inclusion of nationally-contracted players Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi and Kwena Maphaka.

The Proteas will depart for Windhoek from OR Tambo International Airport on 25 August.

Head coach Shukri Conrad commented: “We’ve selected one squad for both series as we feel we have all departments well covered and it provides a great opportunity for players to build on their international caps.

“We saw glimpses of what Connor and Nqobani can offer during the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. It was unfortunate that Jordan picked up an injury in the opening match of that series, so we’re looking forward to seeing him get another opportunity at this level.

“This tour has also opened the door for players who have performed domestically. Duan is one of those players. He is a quality all-rounder who has also shown great character for the Titans.

“Bjorn is an experienced player and proven leader who has successfully captained the Lions, and we have every confidence in his ability to lead this group.

Conrad added: “It is always exciting to play against our neighbouring countries, and the first-ever ODI series between South Africa and Namibia adds further significance, especially as we build towards next year’s World Cup.”

Northern Cape Heat spinner Tshepo Ntuli, North West Dragons batter Meeka-eel Prince and Lions all-rounder Delano Potgieter are uncapped in the four-day squad, while the uncapped trio of Warriors batter Matthew de Villiers, spinners Imraan Manack (Boland) and Kyle Simmons (Western Province) are named in the 50-over squad.

Proteas spinner Senuran Muthusamy has been included in the four-day squad following his recovery from a left knee ligament injury.

The four-day squad will convene at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria on 18 August to begin their preparations for the unofficial Test series, which gets underway at the Tuks Oval from 23 August.
